High quality gas sensor solutions for process control

Gas monitors controlling heat treatment of metals. Endothermic gas is a mixture of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, methane and other gases that is required for hardening or carburising of steel. By carefully controlling the amounts of each gas and the temperature in the treatment furnace, the steel surface can be hardened to provide long lasting components such as gears and tools.

High quality gas sensor solutions for building and IAQ

Precise measurement of air quality. The carbon dioxide content of room air gives a measure of the air quality, especially as it relates to the health and comfort of the people occupying the building. Air quality can be adversely affected by increased levels of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), particulates, or bacteria. Increased ventilation reduces the level of all of these unwanted contaminants. Measuring the CO2 concentration provides an economical way of ensuring that there is sufficient air circulation and prevents over-ventilation which can add unnecessary heating or cooling costs.

High quality gas sensor solutions for biogas

Fast, accurate and reliable measurement of CO2 and CH4 concentration. Methane and CO2 concentration measurements are a key part of the evaluation of the anaerobic digestion process. Too high or too low gas concentration levels can indicate a change in the efficiency of the fermentation process. AD process control systems measure the Methane content (and often the CO2 content) of the gas stream to control or evaluate the AD process and warn of problems. Edinburgh Sensors provide high performance OEM gas detectors that are able to give fast, accurate and reliable measurements of both CO2 and Methane concentrations.

Large pipes & ducts, hot tapping, purging flow solutions

The measurement of gas flow in large ducts or pipes offers its own set of challenges. Large ducts and pipes often have swirls or turbulence in them which makes measurement of true gas flow difficult. Sierra has developed a number of solutions to this vexing problem, including stand-alone flow conditioning elements and multiple arrays of thermal sensors. By including hot taps and purging systems, such arrays can be very flexible.

    Methane Sensing for Coal Mining

Application: The majority (around 60%) of the coal seams currently being extracted worldwide are so far underground that open cast mining cannot take place and, therefore, underground mining techniques need to be used. Consequently, workers have to enter and work in confined spaces. One of the major problems that this creates is the dangers from Methane (CH4) gas which occurs in Mine gas.

Gas Detection Solutions for GHG Monitoring

Most sources of fugitive emissions are from multiple points rather than single point sources. So, open path area or perimeter monitoring provides more meaningful fugitive emissions data than an array of point sensors or a program of grab sampling. Point measurements may underestimate emissions because of missing locations with high gas concentrations, or conversely overestimate because they are located in areas of high concentrations. Grab sampling programs typically check only a small percentage of potential leak locations and extrapolate results to an entire facility. Wide margins of uncertainty are associated with such extrapolations. Open path monitoring provides continuously updated, real-time, integrated emissions across a facility boundary. This provides a complete picture of the fugitive emissions across that boundary, enabling identification of specific operations and times that give rise to higher emissions, and so enabling these emissions to be properly managed and controlled.

High quality gas sensor solutions for landfill

State-of-the-art systems enabling easy monitoring of CO2 and CH4 gases. Capped Landfill Sites produce a range of gases, mostly methane and carbon dioxide. Legislation requires that these gases are safely removed from beneath the cap to avoid a physical explosion due to the build-up of pressure beneath the cap. Safe disposal usually entails burning such as flare stacks, internal combustion engines or by processing to produce Methane gas fuel. For large sites with access to power distribution infrastructure internal combustion engines are used to generate electricity which is fed into the local electricity grid. All of the above safe disposal process require the measurement of the Methane content (and in many cases the CO2 concentration). Edinburgh Sensors provide gas sensors for both Methane and CO2 that can be integrated into landfill gas processing systems enabling easy monitoring of these gases.

High quality gas sensor solutions for mining

Fast, accurate and reliable measurement of CH4. The extraction of coal releases methane gas, which can mix with the air in a mine to form a hazard due to its flammability. Ventilation with fresh air from the surface is used to dilute the methane and reduce the risk of explosion. Monitoring of the methane content of the stale air exiting the mine allows the amount of ventilation to be controlled. Although our sensors are not ATEX approved for use in potentially explosive atmospheres they are suitable for monitoring air containing methane concentrations below the lower explosive limit. Our OEM products can be built into equipment which is approved for use in the monitoring of mine exhaust gas and similar applications.

High quality gas sensor solutions for modified atmosphere packaging

Extending the shelf-life of perishable foods. Changing the atmosphere inside the packaging the shelf life of many fresh products can be extended. For example, by decreasing the amount of oxygen and increasing the carbon dioxide the shelf life of many fruits may be significantly improved. Using various gas combinations it is also possible to slow down the growth of bacteria and extend the shelf-life of other perishable foods like meat, fish and vegetables.

    Sensor for Biogas

Anaerobic Digestion plants produce various gas components from a source material (or feedstock) that can be composed either solely or as a mixture of slurries, purpose-grown crops, food and organic waste material. The composition of the gas produced varies depending upon the feedstock and the Anaerobic digestion process itself. As a consequence, it is normal to measure various components of the resultant gas produced to evaluate the efficiency of the Anaerobic Digestion process. Furthermore, due to the flammable nature of Methane (CH4), and the risk of asphyxiation, most plants feature ambient air monitoring to protect personnel from any unplanned accumulation of leaked gas. CH4 is the gas component fuel, which is the intended end product of the anaerobic digestion process. In biogas plants, the concentration of CH4 in a working plant varies between 50%-75%, which is well above the Upper Explosive Limit (UEL).

Gas Detection Solutions for Hydrogen Fluoride (HF) Safety

Hydrogen Fluoride (HF) is a very useful chemical used in a variety of industries. However, HF is highly toxic with potential fatal consequences with exposure to humans, so facilities that make or use HF should exercise great care. Nevertheless, there is always the risk of leaks from process elements such as valves, pump seals and storage vessels. Tanker loading, transporting and unloading operations also provide opportunity for HF releases. Industrial processes that make or use HF typically have arrays of point sensors distributed throughout the unit. However, these sensors are maintenance intensive and have relatively slow response times. In addition, a point sensor will not detect an HF release unless it is located directly in the area of that release. Electrochemical HF sensors also respond to chlorine, ammonia, and sulfur dioxide, resulting in false alarms.

High quality gas sensor solutions for total organic carbon (TOC)

Minimising costs through measurement of CO2 concentration. Both water suppliers and water users need to know the quality of the water they are supplying, using and disposing of so as to minimise their costs. One measure of water quality is the organic carbon content (TOC). TOC is measured by oxidising the organic carbon to produce CO2 which is then measured and the value converted into a TOC measurement. Edinburgh Sensors supply sensors to measure the CO2 concentration produced by oxidising the organic carbon in a water sample, allowing the TOC to be calculated. This TOC value determines one measure of how clean the water sample is.
