Toxicological Evaluation of the Chemical Oxidation Methods for Landfill Stabilization
Abstract : As the stabilization criteria for landfill sites, only chemical criteria for the leachate discharges from the landfill sites have been used in Japan and many other countries. Recently, chemical oxidation has been developed as a method for the early-stabilization of landfills. However, by-products that are difficult to detect by chemical analysis can be produced by this method. ...

Evaluation of a sequential aerobic?anaerobic treatment of municipal solid waste in a bioreactor landfill
A sequential aerobic-anaerobic bioreactor landfill was operated and monitored over a period of 184 days. The bioreactor was filled with 120 kg of organic fraction of Municipal Solid Waste. Leachate recirculation was applied. The results showed rapid degradation of organic matter with rapid settlement during the aerobic period. The initial COD and BOD5 were reduced from 46,500 and 41,500 mg/L to ...

Initial stages of pollutants dispersion around municipal waste disposal facilities: a case study in Northern Portugal
The combined use of several geological, geochemical and geophysical observations during six years enabled the detection of a very faint halo of chemical contamination induced by the operation of a young waste disposal facility in Northern Portugal. The halo does not classify as pollution by any standards, but is observed to be intensifying and thus signals a potential hazardous situation in ...
