Monitoring solutions for the De-NOx plants

In recent years the number of Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) and Selective Non-Catalytic Reduction (SNCR) plants for De-NOx have increased significantly. Continuous analysis of NOx prior to the de-NOx plant is often required to measure the concentration generated by the combustion process. This may be required to provide feed-forward to the Ammonia/Urea injection system and also to allow the effectiveness of the reduction process to be assessed. Continuous analysis of NOx post-reduction is required to allow the effectiveness of the reduction process to be assessed. It may also be beneficial to monitor NH3 slippage at this stage by calculating from the pre and post NOx levels if excess Ammonia/Urea is being applied.

Determination of total sulfur dioxide in wine and beer

Method allows determination of mass concentration of total sulfur dioxide (sulfurous acid and its salts, food additives E220–E228) in wine, wine materials, beer and beer products by capillary electrophoresis (CE) using capillary electrophoresis system “CAPEL® -105M”. The mass concentration of total sulfur dioxide is regulated by normative documents to be held within 100– 400 mg/L for different types of wine and wine materials and within 20–50 mg/L for beer products. According to European and Russian regulations it is allowed not to indicate on the labels the presence of sulfur dioxide in beverages if its concentration is less than 10 mg/L.

EDXRF spectrometers for ultra low sulfur

Compliance with the ASTM method at low concentrations sulfur. Sulfur is a major element of importance because it forms sulfuric acid in the atmosphere when burned and has harmful impact on the human health and on the environment. In the mid-2000`s, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) began a program to greatly reduce the amount of Sulfur in petroleum products. The current allowable sulfur limit in vehicle fuel is 15 ppm (parts per million). To reduce the pollution coming from vessels the international maritime Organization (IMO) established new limits on emission of sulfur oxides. In Emission Controlled Areas the sulfur limit will be 0.1 % starting 2015. The continued strategy by EPA and IMO to reduce the amount of sulfur in petroleum products put a great demand on sulfur monitoring in fuel and oil products.

Continuous emissions monitoring for sulphuric acid production plants

The process control of a sulphuric acid plant needs good and reliable detection of gas phase sulphur dioxide (SO2). To measure SO2 is a challenge due to the corrosive environment and high concentration of SO2. Several places in the process needs to be monitored and to transport the sample gas is difficult. A large dynamic range is needed as the SO2 concentration can vary between 15% volume and a few mg/m3. Most systems installed need a lot of maintenance, sometimes as often as every day.

Air filtration and gas purification solutions for municipal

There are ever more uses of water in human activities that require its subsequent purification. Of this, treating this water in waste water treatment plants (WWTP) before releasing it into the ecosystem is in rising demand. Additionally, there is also an increasing need to treat solid waste in rubbish tips to minimise environment impact in this process.

Ambient air quality monitoring solutions for remote sensing of ship emissions

New regulation forces ships to lower the emissions of SO2. Ships travelling in SECA areas has to either run on low sulphur fuel, or install SO2 scrubbers. To measure the SO2 emissions from a ship is not an easy task. OPSIS provides the Port Authorities with a unique measurement principle where the emissions from the ship is measured remotely. Light is passing the emissions and by analyzing the light, concentrations of SO2 can be measured.

  • Measurement of sulphur in oil and fuels for oil & gas industry

There is a continuing and increasing demand for a rapid, simple and cost-effective measurement of sulfur in a wide range of petroleum products including automotive, marine and aviation fuels. Benchtop EDXRF instruments such as the world renown Lab-X3500 and associated X-Supreme8000, can be found in many refinery laboratories/testing houses, with the instrument often operated by production staff on a 24/7 basis, giving accurate results conforming to globally accepted test methods, e.g. ASTM D4294, ISO20847, and the new ISO13032,etc. Both instruments used the analytical technique of Energy-Dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) which is well regarded for its excellent performance, versatility, ease of use, speed, and cost-effectiveness.

  • Total Reduced Sulfur (S) monitoring

Total reduced sulfur(s), which include hydrogen sulfide (H2S), methyl mercaptan (methanethiol, CH3SH), dimethyl sulfide (CH3SCH3), and dimethyl disulfide (CH3S2CH3), occur naturally in the environment and can also be present in numerous industrial gaseous streams – petroleum refining, natural gas extraction, and chemical operations like the pulp/paper industry. Hydrogen sulfide is the most prevalent of the total reduced sulfurs, and is commonly found in volcanic gases, marshes and swamps, wetlands and mud flats, sulfur springs and decaying organic matter. Additionally, hydrogen sulfide is produced by living organisms, including human beings, through the digestion and metabolization of sulfur-containing materials. It must be noted that sulfur dioxide (SO2), sulfur trioxide (SO3) and sulfuric acid mist are not included in the determination of TRS, as these are oxidized sulfur compounds and are permitted and monitored separately from TRS.

  • Total Sulfur monitoring

Total Sulfur includes all the gases described within total reduced sulfur, as well as sulfur dioxide as these compounds are oxidised forms of sulfur. Exposure to sulfur dioxides, and other reduced sulfur based compounds can cause many harmful effects in humans including headaches, general discomfort up to death in large doses. Those with impaired heart or lung function and asthmatics are at increased risk. Sulfur dioxide, one of the major pollutants, is absorbed by soils and plants and captured within and below clouds and in certain circumstances can increase the acidity of rain.

  • Measurement solution for siloxane measurement in land-fill gas via FTIR

    What are siloxanes?

The generation of electricity from municipal digesters and land fill is of increasing interest, as the biogas generated is a form of renewable energy. Organosilicon compounds are often present in products such as shampoo and cosmetics, as well as industrial products and lubricants, and they move into land-fill. These volatile compounds find their way into land-fill or digester gases as siloxanes.
