2020 National Healthy Homes Month in Puerto Rico and the Important Role of Indoor Environmental Quality
Zimmetry Environmental provides indoor environmental quality (IEQ) assessments, testing and consulting services to protect families and building occupants from exposure risks.
Bayamon, Puerto Rico, June 8th, 2020 -- It has been estimated that most people spend about 90% of their time indoors. During the COVID-19 pandemic, that figure certainly rose even higher. With schools closed and so many with jobs deemed non-essential by government officials, most people were primarily in their homes over the last several months.
Having a home that provides a safe and healthy indoor environment is critical for their well-being. Recognizing this point, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) began recognizing the month of June as National Healthy Homes Month (NHHM) five years ago. NHHM offers an opportunity for people in Puerto Rico and across the United States to learn about the role healthy homes play in their lives.
In support of this effort, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and its National Center for Environmental Health (NCEH) published A Healthy Home for Everyone. The document offers information about the connection between housing and health. It provides some valuable facts, figures and tips for homeowners and tenants, including evidence that many homes still have unhealthy conditions. For example:
1 in 16 homes have high radon levels
1 in 10 homes have water leaks
1 in 6 homes have structural problems
1 in 4 homes have lead-based paint
1 in 4 homes do not have a working smoke alarm
“After spending so much time in our homes during the COVID-19 pandemic, it has never been clearer that not only do homes need to be a sanctuary from the outside world, they also need to provide us with a healthy indoor environment,” said Harry Pena, President of Zimmetry Environmental. “In Puerto Rico, our local experts are dedicated to identifying and resolving exposure risks people may encounter in their homes, schools and place of business. Zimmetry offers air and IEQ testing and monitoring, along with building inspections and consulting services for biological, chemical and radiological pollutants. These include mold, lead, asbestos, radon, microbial pathogens, asthma triggers, allergens and respiratory irritants to name a few. If testing indicates issues are present, our professionals can help to eliminate or mitigate any concerns.”
