The clean up of trinitrotoluene (TNT) wastes and contaminated soils from an abandoned TNT salvage operation is underway at the Apache Powder Superfund Site in Cochise County. Clean-up operations involved an unexploded ordnance (UXO) survey, on-site pre-burn of high-grade materials, excavation, and off-site disposal. Approximately 5,400 lb of high-grade TNT wastes (averaging approximately 33 percent TNT by weight) were burned on-site while air quality was monitored to assure compliance with National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) and Arizona Ambient Air Quality Guidelines (AAAQG). Approximately 3,600 lb of residual ash as well as approximately 620,000 lb of lower grade TNT waste (< 10 percent TNT) and TNT- contaminated soil were transported off-site for disposal at the U.S. Ecology Landfill in Beatty, Nevada.
