Lansing, MI, August 27th, 2013 -- Oregon was the first state to make Labor Day a holiday. Seven years later, in 1894, it became a federal holiday. This special day that occurs on the first Monday of September, celebrates the nation’s strength, freedom and leadership that is made possible by the American worker.
The American worker has built this nation and in recent decades helped increase productivity dramatically through their determination and the introduction of new technologies that have helped make them some of the most productive workers in the world. In honor of the American worker, the American Board of Industrial Hygiene thanks all those that continue to provide services and products and those dedicated individuals from the industrial hygiene community who work to protect and enhance the health and safety of people at work and in their communities.
The industrial hygiene profession has a long history of helping to protect workers. In fact, the term “industrial hygiene” gained popularity back in the early 1900s, not long after Labor Day became a federal holiday. In 1960, ABIH was established and since then has been administering the Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) certification. The CIH program is the world’s largest, premier certification in the industrial hygiene profession.
CIHs have been trained to anticipate, recognize, evaluate and control of hazards that could be faced by workers and the community. “There are potential hazards associated with many types of work that employees face on a daily basis,” said Tracy Parsons, CIH, Administrative Program Manager at ABIH. “CIHs help to prevent countless illnesses and injuries through the application of their knowledge and skills. ABIH would like to take this opportunity to thank our nation’s workers and recognize the industrial hygiene community and the thousands of CIHs across the globe that help keep us all healthy and safe,” he continued.
