WASHINGTON, April 24, 2013 /PR Newswire/ -- The American Chemistry Council (ACC) today released the following statement regarding the New York City Department of Sanitation announcement of an expanded plastics recycling initiative:

'The American Chemistry Council commends the new plastics recycling initiative announced today in New York City, which reflects a growing trend of cities and communities across the country expanding the collection of these types of containers.

'Recycling of rigid plastics has nearly tripled since 2007, and the percentage of community recycling programs collecting this material for recycling has surged to over 57% today from only 40% in 2011.

'This expansion of plastics recycling in New York and around the nation highlights the opportunities that exist today and in the future to recycle materials that haven't traditionally been included in municipal recycling programs, such as foodservice packaging.  Although recycling any type of foodservice has its challenges, leading cities are increasingly collecting polystyrene foam foodservice for recycling.  We look forward to continuing our conversations with New York City to expand on today's announcement and develop a polystyrene foam recycling program to ensure our environment, businesses and manufacturers are protected.'
