Boston, MA -- Actio Corporation, global software provider to trading partners invloved in risk and compliance, today announced bolstered security assurance for Actio customers and their supply chain network.
The US Department of Commerce provides its “Safe Harbor” certification mark to organizations that maintain their “current” status by certifying their practices in an official, annual filing with the US Department of Commerce.
'Actio proudly displays the Safe Harbor emblem on every page of the corporate web site,' said K.M. Hurley, Director of Corporate Communications at Actio. 'Along with SAS 70 certification, Safe Harbor certification sends a message that a software company— ours— is serious about the business of data security in an era of rapid-fire global trade.'
Why Safe Harbor?
The European Commission’s Directive on Data Protection went into effect in October of 1998, and would prohibit the transfer of personal data to non-European Union countries that do not meet the European Union (EU) “adequacy” standard for privacy protection. While the United States (US) and the EU both aspire to privacy protection for citizens, the US takes a different approach to privacy from that taken by the EU.
In order to bridge the differences in approach and provide a streamlined means for US organizations to comply with the Directive on Data Protection, the US Department of Commerce in consultation with the European Commission developed a 'safe harbor' framework and an online resource to provide the information an organization would need to evaluate and join the US-EU Safe Harbor program.
Eligibility for Certification
Any US organization that is subject to the jurisdiction of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) or US air carriers and ticket agents subject to the jurisdiction of the Department of Transportation (DoT) may participate in the Safe Harbor. Organizations generally not subject to FTC jurisdiction include certain financial institutions (such as banks, investment houses, credit unions, and savings & loan institutions), telecommunication common carriers, labor associations, non-profit organizations, agricultural co-operatives, and meat processing facilities.
