Speaker David Tompkins, Sector Specialist, WRAP gives his thoughts on the future of the digestate market
“Digestate placement remains a cost for AD operators, and may always do so. While farmers are increasingly realising the benefit of digestates, this market is at significant risk from supplies of poor quality material - particularly visible film plastic contamination. Removing film plastics is relatively simple, but leaves operators with another stream of material that needs to be placed, and screening also removes organic matter - eroding the wider soil benefits of digestate. Balancing operating costs, customer demands and environmental outcomes presents a key challenge to the sector.”
