AECOM Promotes US Air Force Sustainable Remediation Tool for Contaminated Site Cleanups - New Technology Optimizes Green and Sustainable Site Remediation Practices

SAN ANTONIO - AECOM has expanded its role assisting the United States Air Force Center for Engineering and Environment (AFCEE) by promoting awareness and use of AFCEE’s publicly available Sustainable Remediation Tool. AECOM’s global environmental practice, a world leader in developing environmental solutions, has a leading Green and Sustainable Remediation (GSR) practice that is advancing the understanding and beneficial uses of sustainable remediation in technical forums and projects around the world. AECOM began SRT™ development for the US Air Force in 2008.

According to Erica Becvar, head of the AFCEE Technology Transfer Outreach, “The SRT helps optimize existing remediation technologies by providing a highly effective tool for comparing remediation approaches based on sustainability metrics.” Historic approaches to remediating contaminated sites have not fully considered sustainability concepts. The SRT was developed to aid environmental professionals in incorporating sustainability concepts into remediation decision-making.

Doug Ruppel, AECOM’s SRT project manager, added, “Increasing use of the SRT improves environmental cleanups based on meaningful metrics—and contributes to the Air Force’s important sustainability goals and leadership.” U.S. federal agencies must continuously improve sustainability of environmental and energy-related operations by reducing greenhouse gas emissions; increasing energy efficiency, water conservation, and waste reduction; and promoting environmentally responsible products and technologies.

AECOM will promote the benefits and improved functionality of the USAF SRT™ at environmental and remediation forums including the University of Massachusetts’ Conference on Soils, Sediments, Water and Energy, and train and support SRT users. The SRT addresses remediation technologies including: excavation; soil vapor extraction; pump and treat; enhanced in situ bioremediation; permeable reactive barriers; in situ chemical oxidation; thermal remediation and long-term monitoring/monitored natural attenuation. In 2009, AFCEE awarded AECOM a contract to develop an interface between SRT and AECOM’s proprietary Remedial Action Cost Engineering and Requirements (RACER™) software solution for estimating costs of environmental projects.

AECOM’s global Green and Sustainable Remediation practice received an Environmental Business Journal Business Achievement Award for integrating green remediation principles across the full remediation process, developing Sustainable Remediation tools, contributing extensively to the technical literature; and taking GSR to the field in multiple green remediation projects including the ACEC Grand Award-winning project at a Superfund site in Minnesota.
