SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Agilent Technologies Inc. (NYSE: A) today introduced the Agilent 4500 Polymer Package, designed to help manufacturers ensure the quality and safety of products made from PVC polymer.
'There is a critical need to both identify polymers and rapidly screen them for banned or restricted chemicals such as phthalates,' said Phil Binns, Agilent's vice president and managing director of Spectroscopy. 'Completely portable, the new product brings the analytical precision of Fourier transform infrared spectrometry to any location and delivers lab-quality results.'
Phthalates are widely used additives in thermoplastic polymers, such as PVC. Because phthalates have been associated with cancer and other medical risks, the level of certain phthalates in toys and children's products is regulated and cannot exceed 0.1 percent. The Agilent 4500 can nondestructively determine the chemical composition of a polymer in seconds; if the polymer is identified as PVC, the 4500 will accurately measure the amount of phthalate present. Agilent's exclusive calibrated methodology accurately measures total phthalates-to the 0.1 percent level-and does so even in the presence of various fillers and additives (including carbon black).
The 4500 Polymer Package is based on Agilent's battery-powered 4500 FTIR spectrometer system. The spectrometer in this package is equipped with a triple-reflection diamond ATR sample interface, a comprehensive ATR polymer library and proprietary calibrated method for the analysis of total phthalates in PVC. Calibrated methods for measuring phthalates in a broad range of polymers can be rapidly added to the package as they become available.
