In the same year that IBM released its first PC with a hard-drive and Björn Borg retired from competitive tennis, Enviro Technology Services began selling automatic analysers to monitor real time ambient air quality. The Stroud-based company sourced and harnessed emerging cutting-edge measurement technology to provide a service to local authorities and power generators in the UK, bound for the first time by fledgling environmental legislation to monitor air quality in their areas.
Thirty years later, ET is a world leader in the supply, installation and servicing of environmental monitoring equipment and is active in 42 countries. The company specialise in systems that monitor ambient air quality and industrial emissions. Customers range from local authorities and overseas governments to leading research institutes and blue chip industry, with ET able to supply anything from a single analyser through to a bespoke air quality monitoring network. Turnover in 1983 was less than £100,000 compared with 2012’s £6.5 million.
ET was established in 1983 with one service engineer. The company now employs 50 people and has the UK’s largest network of regionally-based engineers who service air monitoring equipment on some 500 sites in the UK and Ireland, as well as work on global installation projects. ET has satellite offices in Ireland and Qatar and a custom-designed 1,700m2 head office and factory in Thrupp, near Stroud in Gloucestershire. The company is led by Joint MDs, Mike Webley and Duncan Mounsor, who have been with ET for 30 and 23 years respectively.
Mike says: “Our initial success was down to being in the right place at the right time. We started the company just as scientific and public concern about air pollution was gathering momentum and our growth was then driven by new environmental laws and legislation”.
Duncan adds, “A lot of our success, I think, is about always having a good mix of both innovative and time-proven products, not being afraid to take some risks and maintaining a can-do, flexible approach with our clients.
And as Mike and Duncan both acknowledge, it’s the passion, dedication and hard work of the entire company that are the major success factors of ET and any other business.
