Airshow Weather Station

There are hundreds of small airports that have little or no instrumentation. A simple wind sock serves as the only indicator of surface conditions. Such is the case for the runway at Preston, Idaho.

On August 2nd, 2014, they held an airshow to raise funds to extend the runway. After nearly a year of preparations, the show was on. But, they lacked basic wind instruments. My beautiful daughter helped me set up an MS-130 a couple of days before. This station was connected to Weather Underground through the embedded cell phone and also provided SMS text message weather reports.

I would have loved to catch more video of the show, but I sat with the air boss, receiving quantitative wind data that was relayed to the pilots throughout the event. It was a great experience and added a level of sophistication to a small Idaho airport.
