All roads lead to Rome

Global leading recruitment consultancy supports an employee as he runs the Rome Marathon in March in the efforts to raise money for cancer charities.

Allen & York - specialists in the Natural & Built Environment, Energy, Waste, Health & Safety and Engineering sectors – are helping to support ‘Sophie’s Legacy’.

Sophie Drury, an inspirational lady now known nationwide, fought ovarian cancer for a decade in her short and well-lived life of 34 years. Although she underwent many operations she failed to let her battle of the disease limit her and continued to live life to the fullest with a smile on her face.

An employee at Allen & York had a close connection to Sophie and it was suggested, after her death in April 2008, that her friends and family would like to run a marathon to raise money for two charities, supporting cancer sufferers, that meant so much to Sophie – Prospect Hospice and Macmillan Nurses –, this was the birth of ‘Sophie’s Legacy’.

All employees at Allen & York are having a fundraising day where various activities will take place to help their colleague who is running the 26 mile, Rome Marathon, raise money alongside individual pledges being made to the chosen charities.

It was decided that Sophie’s family and friends would be invited to join together to run the Rome Marathon, now totaling nearly 50 people, so that her memory is remembered in the ‘most beautiful city in the world’ – a common feature that Sophie and Rome shared, true beauty.

“It is said that all roads lead to Rome, in this case the journey of Sophie’s memory is beginning there. She touched so many people and so it was decided that her determination should live on through her own legacy.” Said the employee from Allen & York who is running the marathon.

A target of £50,000 has been set to be raised in this sporting venture, the figure today (3/02/09) currently standing at £29,628. The Rome Marathon is only the first of many events entered to raise money for Sophie’s favourite charities whilst keeping her memory alive.
