VOORHEES, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- American Water (NYSE: AWK), the nation’s largest publicly traded water and wastewater utility company, today announced it was selected as a runner-up in the CR Reporting Awards 2012, receiving recognition for its first full corporate responsibility report in the “Best First Time Report” category. Other companies that were honored as winners or runners-up in this international competition included Bloomberg L.P., Coca-Cola Enterprises, Hewlett-Packard Company, Microsoft Corporation, and The Walt Disney World Company.
Issued in July 2011, American Water’s CR report reaffirmed the company as the first U.S. water and wastewater company to report on environmental, social and governance performance against Global Reporting Index (GRI) guidelines. The company sees this report as part of its overall corporate responsibility strategy and a way to regularly review performance and engage with stakeholders.

American Water’s first biennial report includes the company’s priorities, policies and approaches to corporate responsibility, and covers performance for the 2010 Fiscal Year, using GRI G3 Sustainability Reporting Guidelines, including GRI’s Reporting Principles of materiality, sustainability context, stakeholder inclusiveness and completeness. Additionally, the report uses the Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility Liquid Assets report to guide reporting and indicators specific to the water industry. The report is self-declared at GRI Application Level B.
