A recent report from Navigant Research analyzes the global market for the eight underlying technologies that are the primary components of synchrophasors/wide area situational awareness (SWASA) solutions, including global market forecasts for revenue and installations through 2023.
Typically, transmission systems are monitored using supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems that collect status data at 4- to 5-second intervals. However, many disturbances can only be seen using sub-second, high-frequency interval data on voltage, current, phase angles, and other system characteristics. Today, wide area situational awareness systems, particularly synchrophasors, are being used to collect and transmit data to identify high-speed disturbances before outages occur. “The next generation of SWASA solutions are expected to be part new technologies and part new IT applications and systems that collect, manage, analyze, alert, and automate rapid response to network frequency and phase angle synchronization,” says James McCray, senior research analyst with Navigant Research. “Because of this, many of today’s communications systems and back-office analytics will need to be replaced with new systems that can support and provide the analytics and visualization tools necessary to better provide transmission network reliability and resiliency.”
In Asia Pacific, where large-scale implementations of new high-voltage transmission systems are occurring, grid operators in countries such as India and China are familiar with SWASA technologies and solutions, and in many cases require them. For this reason, according to the report, the region will fuel growth in the SWASA market during the forecast period, with additional traction coming from North America, Europe, and Latin America. These regions combined are expected to account for 90 percent of the SWASA market.
