Apartment Possibly Infested by Mold has a Colorado Family on Edge
LA Testing offers mold and other indoor air quality (IAQ) testing services for property managers, tenants and homeowners.
Pasadena, CA, June 29th, 2011 -- Earlier this month, the local affiliate of ABC News reported about a Northglenn family’s struggle with mold in their apartment. The mother of three children moved into the complex in early May, a month that saw heavy rainfall. Shortly after the rains began she noticed water leaking into the apartment.
The flooding was so bad that the tenant claimed she had to use buckets to collect the water leaking from the ceiling, but despite her efforts the carpeting and padding became soaked. After repeated rainfalls and subsequent leaking even the paint began to separate from the drywall.
She reported that each time management of the complex would send a repair crew and during one of their visits she observed them pull back the carpeting to reveal what she believes to be mold growth. She is now trying to get out of her lease, but the property management says that what she saw was discoloration from the moisture, but not actual mold growth.
“Mold can begin to grow on many common building materials and furnishing in as short as 24 to 48 hours,” reported Ben Sublasky, National Director of Client Services for LA Testing and EMSL Analytical, a leading mold testing laboratory. “Identifying mold growth on surfaces is a fairly straightforward process that either the tenant or the property management could quickly resolve. A small piece of the suspect material, or a simple swab taken from the area, could determine in as short as a day whether or not it’s mold and not simple discoloration,” he continued.
