Apple Joins Ceres Company Network
Ceres announced today that its board of directors has approved Apple as the newest member of the Ceres Company Network. Companies that join the Ceres network demonstrate an executive-level commitment to sustainability and strive to further integrate sustainability into their business strategies. In joining the Ceres network, Apple has committed to continue to improve its social and environmental disclosure and performance by engaging with investors, environmental and civil society groups.
Apple has committed to sourcing 100 percent of its energy from renewable sources. As part of this effort, the company recently announced a 130 megawatt project in Monterey County, California – the largest commercial solar deal in history. Last month, Apple announced it would build two solar power projects in China, with a total capacity of 40 megawatts. Currently, the company powers 100 percent of its U.S. operations and 87 percent of its operations worldwide with renewable energy. Apple has banned the use of benzene and n-hexane in final assembly processes and has created programs to tackle systemic problems in environmental protection and health and safety across its supply chain.
“Apple has made bold commitments to sustainability in recent years, and we look forward to working with the company to continue this effort,' said Mindy Lubber, president of the sustainability advocacy nonprofit, Ceres, which is wrapping up its annual two-day conference today in San Francisco. “Apple recognizes that companies can’t afford to wait when it comes to addressing pressing sustainability challenges such as climate change, water scarcity and labor and human rights protections in product supply chains.”
In 2014, Apple signed Ceres’ Climate Declaration calling for strong climate and energy policies in Washington – a national call to action now supported by over 1,350 companies. The company has also launched a clean water program, working with global suppliers to significantly reduce the amount of water use throughout its supply chain.
