Applications invited for CIWM Awards for Environmental Excellence

With the standard of entries very high this year, the CIWM is reminding companies and individuals that there is only a short time left to send in applications for the CIWM Awards for Environmental Excellence 2008.

Now in their second year, the awards are designed to recognise excellence and innovation within the resources and wastes management industry and also across a number of sectors that are increasingly linked into the recycling and waste minimisation agenda, including construction and retail.

“It is great to see so many companies getting involved,” says CIWM chief executive Steve Lee. “The CIWM supports and acknowledges businesses, industries and individuals that are striving to make a change for the better and our awards are an excellent opportunity to raise awareness of, and reward, best practice.”

The award categories for 2008 are as follows:

• Sustainable Retailer of the Year
• Sustainable Product Development of the Year
• Sustainable Facilities Management Performance of the Year
• Individual Recycling Champion of the Year
• Recycling Performance of the Year
• Vehicle of the Year
• Plant and Equipment of the Year
• Construction and Demolition: Product Use
• Construction and Demolition: Site Management
• Health and Safety Best Practice
• Innovative Practice in Waste and Resource Recovery
• Overall Award for Environmental Excellence

The judging panel brings together senior figures and experts from a number of fields and sectors, including: Dr Liz Goodwin, chief executive of WRAP, Jane Milne, Director of Business & Environment for the British Retail Consortium, John Ingham, environment editor at the Daily Express, Simon Chapman of the Freight Transport Association, Owen Jenkins, director of CIRIA and Colin Mew of the Health & Safety Executive.

Last year saw many high profile and high quality submissions, and the CIWM is expecting more of the same this year. The 2007 finalists included plant and equipment manufacturers

Zoeller Waste Systems and JCB, as well as other well-known waste management names such as Scarab Sweepers and Veolia Environmental Services. The big winner on the night was Envar, which won both the Innovative Practice and overall Award for Environmental Excellence for its generation of heat and power from the co-combustion of paper sludge and biomass fuels.

The full criteria for each award and nomination/application details are available at and the closing date for all applications is 29 August 2008. For table bookings and sponsorship packages visit or contact Julie Fitt on +44 (0)1604 620426.
