AppliTek to provide analyzers for world’s largest solar power project

With the inauguration of the world’s largest solar powered plant on Sunday 17th of March, AppliTek officially announces having procured the water analyzers for Shams 1, located in Abu Dhabi, UAE. The on-line analyzers will be used to monitor the water chemistry of the steam production of the huge power plant, i.e. boiler feed water quality and condensate return quality.

The analyzer package, consisting of several compact liquid analyzers, was already delivered mid 2012 to the integrator responsible for the water sampling panels of the concentrated solar power plant. In both traditional and concentrated solar power plants, the steam cycle is key to generating electricity. By monitoring the critical steam parameters, overall efficiency is increased while a significant reduction in chemicals is possible, which is needed to treat the makeup water for the industrial boilers.

Covering an area of 2.5 sq km, Shams 1 incorporates the latest in concentrated solar power technology and features more than 258,000 mirrors mounted on 768 tracking parabolic trough collectors. It is calculated that the 100 MW power plant will generate clean energy to power 20,000 homes in the UAE.

According to UAE President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, 'Shams 1 is a strategic investment in our country's economic, social and environmental prosperity. The domestic production of renewable energy extends the life of our country's valuable hydrocarbon resources and supports the growth of a promising new industry.'
