While lithium ion batteries offer performance benefits, they remain too expensive for the mass market, report finds

A new report from Navigant Research analyzes the opportunities and challenges present in the global market for light duty stop-start vehicles (SSVs), including global market forecasts for light duty SSVs, segmented by technology and region, through 2024.

Basic stop-start systems, which automatically stop a car’s engine to prevent long idling times, are emerging as one piece of a complex approach to improving fuel economy in light duty vehicles. For recovering, storing, and reusing energy in an SSV, advanced versions of the lead-acid battery are currently the market’s leading energy storage technology, and this is expected to continue through the forecast period. Click to tweet: According to a recent report from Navigant Research, 90% of the light duty SSVs sold globally in 2024 are expected to feature a lead-acid battery.

“The primary driver for manufacturers to produce SSVs is the increasingly challenging legislation on fuel consumption and emissions in most areas of the world,” says David Alexander, senior research analyst with Navigant Research. “Vehicle manufacturers now have to meet strict average fuel economy targets and other measures or face heavy financial penalties, and stop-start technology can help reach these targets.”

With these increasing restrictions on vehicle emissions, manufacturers are looking for the most cost-efficient solutions, and upgraded lead-acid batteries such as valve-regulated lead-acid (VRLA), enhanced flooded batteries (EFBs), and absorbed glass mat (AGM) are currently the best option, according to the report. While lithium ion batteries and ultracapacitors do offer some performance benefits, the overall cost still favors lead-acid chemistry for the high-volume markets.

The report, Stop-Start Vehicles, analyzes the opportunities and challenges present in the global market for light duty SSVs. The study examines the major components of stop-start systems, with a focus on the technologies used for energy storage, including lead-acid batteries, lithium ion (Li-ion) batteries, and ultracapacitors. Global market forecasts for light duty SSVs, segmented by technology and region, extend through 2024. The report also contains profiles of the key market players and detailed analyses of the benefits and market drivers and barriers related to light duty SSVs. An Executive Summary of the report is available for free download on the Navigant Research website.
