Orange, CA, September 26th, 2011 -- WNCT, a CBS affiliate in Greenville, North Carolina, broadcast a story earlier this month about a woman trying to rebuild her life following Hurricane Irene. The woman experienced extensive storm damage to her home, but when rebuilding efforts got underway the whole process came to a sudden halt.
The home, built in 1926, was found to be filled with both asbestos and lead. The woman then discovered that her home owners insurance had an important exclusion. It didn’t cover the cost to remove and abate hazardous materials. The cost to remove the hazardous materials could run in the tens of thousands of dollars, money she doesn’t have. Until it is removed the repairs cannot move forward.
The outcome in this story is yet to be written, but could result in the loose of the home. Unfortunately, cases like this have occurred countless times across the wide swath of the country damaged by Hurricane Irene.
This story brings to light concerns that people need to address following a natural disaster that has caused damage to their homes and places of business. There are fortunately many qualified environmental professionals and remediation experts who are able to help homeowners facing challenges during rebuilding due to mold, asbestos and lead safety concerns.
“With some estimates putting the damages from Hurricane Irene at $10 billion this storm was devastating to countless people across numerous states,” reported Brian Mcfarland, Vice President of Legends Environmental Insurance Services, a leading provider of insurance coverage to the indoor air quality (IAQ), environmental and restoration industries. “Although some property owners will face financial hurdles to repair their properties safely, low interest loans following natural disasters from FEMA can help,” he continued.
