EMSL Analytical -- Tulare Regional Medical Center, an asbestos abatement site located next to the Hillman HealthCare Clinic in Tulare, received an unannounced visit by a state inspector checking the progression of its asbestos removal.
Although the inspector reported that the worksite is safe and secure, patients at the Hillman Clinic are still concerned due to the two buildings’ close proximity.
Asbestos floor tiles cover over half of the hallways in Tulare Regional Medical Center. Additionally, lead was detected in paint in some of the offices in the building. The medical center is undergoing remodeling that will remove both the asbestos and lead.
The Tulare Regional Medical Center is a 50,000 square foot building, built in the 1920s. The management plans on adding new carpet, new paint, and reconfigured cubicles once the abatement is finished. The cost of the remodeling will be an estimated $167,000, excluding the asbestos removal that will cost an estimated $70,000.
Exposure to asbestos can result in serious illness including asbestosis, lung cancer, and mesothelioma.
“Asbestos overexposure causes over 100,000 deaths per year according to the World Health Organization,” states Ed Cahill, Vice President of EMSL’s Asbestos Division. “All of EMSL’s locations, in the United States and Canada, are fully equipped and accredited to test for the presence of asbestos and lead in air, soil, water, and bulk building materials,”
