NEW YORK, NY -- (Marketwire) -- 01/24/12 -- Ash Improvement Technology, Inc. (AIT) announced today that it signed an agreement with Shengli Steel of Vietnam to convert ash and slag waste products into a cement substitute material. The 5-year contract was awarded for Shengli's site located in the Thai Binh province and encompasses treatment of approximately 60,000 annual tons of material for local and export markets.
AIT will apply its proprietary CleanCem process, which was developed to treat coal ash via introduction of proprietary additives in the boiler system. Ash chemistry and mineralogy are modified in the process to attain the performance of a high value cement substitute.
Vietnam represents a sizeable opportunity for the application of AIT's technology, with more than ninety new coal-fired power plants currently under construction, and a strong local demand for construction materials.
'Shengli Steel is clearly ahead of its competitors,' says Marc Zacharias, AIT's CEO. 'The investment Shengli is making today is not only a proactive means to manage waste materials for a profitable return, it is also a hedge against future liabilities that are bound to happen.'
Vietnam's strong industrial growth already carries environmental challenges that are all too well known in many developed economies. With a high population density, storage and disposal of contaminated waste materials will be increasingly difficult without affecting neighboring communities.
'AIT's process is the solution to address disposal of waste cost-effectively, before being forced to do so by environmental regulation.'
AIT develops solutions to convert waste ash into beneficial products used in the construction industry. The application of AIT's patent pending CleanCem process avoids disposal of ash altogether, and transforms an environmental liability into a source of revenue for owners of power plants.
