CERCare co-authors in a recent publication which analyses the strengths and weaknesses of the FAIRMODE benchmarking approach of European-wide, regional and urban scale air quality model applications.
The 'Forum for air quality modelling in Europe' (FAIRMODE) is an EU initiative created in 2007 to bring together air quality modellers and users to promote and support the harmonised use of models across the EU, with emphasis on model application under the European Air Quality Directive.
Dr Jenny Stocker from CERC has attended the FAIRMODE Technical Meetings since 2011, primarily contributing to theAssessment Working Group. A procedure for benchmarking and evaluating EU Air Quality Directive (AQD) modelling applications has been developed within the FAIRMODE framework, leading to free software known asThe DELTA Tool. Jenny has co-authored the publication: 'Strengths and weaknesses of the FAIRMODE benchmarking methodology for the evaluation of air quality models', which includes a SWOT analysis of the methodology based on feedback from users of the tool.
Smoke from countless wildfires in Canada have blanketed communities from New York City to Charlotte with unhealthy air this summer. During one day alone, over 125 million people in the region were under an air quality alert and the air quality in New York City registered as the worst in the world.
A New York Air Quality Health Advisory about the wildfire smoke warned:
Exposure can cause short-term health effects such as irritation to the eyes, nose, and throat, coughing, sneezing, runny nose, and shortness of...

Alongside core activities of developing air quality modelling software and providing environmental consultancy services, CERC take an active role in UK and international scientific research activities. 2022 was a busy year for CERC`s research team, with ten published co-author journal articles.
New software development and evaluation was covered in two papers. The improved elevated roads modelling implemented in ADMS-Urban and ADMS-Roads, commissioned by Highways England (now National Highways), was discussed...
Three of CERC`s projects are featured in a recent report from the Chief Medical Officer for England. The 2022 annual report focusses on air pollution, discussing the effects of air pollution on health, reporting progress made in improving air quality over recent decades, and highlighting possibilities for achievable solutions for continuing improvement. It includes discussion of both outdoor and indoor air pollution and gives suggestions for future research. The outdoor air pollution modelling projects involving...
