A new study reported in Indoor Environment Connections’ August issue discusses Harvard researchers’ findings that some people with certain genes appear to be more likely to suffer asthmatic attacks in homes with high levels of mold. A few years ago a study, published in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives, indicated that children’s asthma risk more than doubled if their home had the smell of mold. The study looked at 1,900 children from Finland and reported a 2 ½ times increased risk of asthma when a moldy odor was detected in the home.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reports that exposure to mold is a known asthma trigger. The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) states that 60 million people in the United States suffer from allergies and asthma. The AAFA goes on to calculate that the cost to the United States for asthma, not including allergies, is $18 billion dollars a year. Their numbers indicate that every day in the U.S.:
- 40,000 people miss school or work due to asthma
- 30,000 people have an asthma attack
- 5,000 people visit the emergency room due to asthma
- 1,000 people are admitted to the hospital due to asthma
- 11 people die from asthma
Many of the between 1 in 5 Americans suffers from allergies or asthma can blame mold as a major culprit or trigger for the condition. The serious conditions caused by asthma include a tightening of the airways along with an increase in mucus resulting in difficulty in breathing and in extreme cases, death.
