August Mack Environmental receives the first gold LEED certification for commercial interiors in Indianapolis
August Mack Environmental, Inc., a full-service environmental, health and safety consulting firm, is pleased to announce that its Indianapolis office has received Gold LEED Certification for Commercial Interiors from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). The Indianapolis office of August Mack, located at 1200 N. Meridian Street, is the 13th project in Indiana to reach a LEED certification and the first project in Indianapolis to achieve a Gold LEED rating for Commercial Interiors.
August Mack relocated its Indianapolis office from 8007 Castleton Road to The Lexington at Meridian building located at the corner of 12th Street and Meridian Street in May 2008. One of the main factors for the move was due to the August Mack’s significant growth and desire to become more involved in the local community. The downtown location was chosen because the building provided August Mack with an opportunity to move into a historic, renovated building in an area of downtown that was undergoing revitalization.
At the onset of selecting the new location for its Indianapolis office, August Mack made a commitment to creating a sustainable workplace for its employees and teamed with Shiel Sexton and CSO to accomplish this task. Utilizing the Gold LEED standard as the benchmark for its office sustainability efforts, August Mack designed its Indianapolis office around the incorporation of as much renewable, reused and refurbished materials as possible in order to lessen the environmental impact of the move. “As an environmental consulting firm, we are continually educating our clients on how they can help make their business more sustainable. The relocation of our Indianapolis office gave us a perfect platform to apply our skills directly at our workplace and make significant investments in our employees and their work environment so we could truly practice what we preach,” said August Mack President, Geoff Glanders.
The Indianapolis office now boasts daylight views for 90 percent of the office, heat island preventive roofing, no irrigation landscaping, an extensive recycling program, showering and changing facilities and Energy Star appliances. Through its efforts, August Mack was able to recycle more than 89 percent of the total waste generated during the renovation. August Mack also spent 96 percent of its total furniture and furnishing costs for the relocation on salvaged, refurbished or used furniture. August Mack supported local businesses by securing more than 75 percent of the construction materials and furnishing materials and products from within a 500 mile radius. Furthermore, August Mack was able to reduce its environmental impact by utilizing salvaged, reused or refurbished materials for 11 percent of its renovation costs and recycled materials for 13 percent.
“Receiving the Gold LEED certification from the USGBC was the icing on the cake for us. When we started this process many months ago, we were interested not only in being recognized for our own sustainability efforts, but also in creating a business culture that “walks the walk” as far as environmental commitment. . And, I am proud to say that we have accomplished that task. Moving forward, our goal is to continue to educate other businesses on the importance of sustainability and the positive economic, environmental and social benefits it can have on an organization,” said August Mack President, Geoff Glanders.
