Australian Industrial Chemicals Introduction Scheme (AICIS) to Replace NICNAS
The National Industrial Chemicals Notification and Assessment Scheme (NICNAS) of Australia will potentially see replacement by Australian Industrial Chemicals Introduction Scheme (AICIS) by July of 2018.
The Australian Government has presented two bills to the Parliament of the Commonwealth of Australia. The first is the Industrial Chemicals Bill 2017 and the second is the Industrial Chemicals (Notification and Assessment) Amendment Bill 2017. These bills describe the legislative framework for a reformed, risk-based regulatory scheme for the Commonwealth to continue to regulate the introduction of industrial chemicals in Australia, and amend the current Industrial Chemicals (Notification and Assessment) Act 1989.
The reformed scheme is intended to replace NICNAS. The Bill also implements a national ban on the use of new animal test data for chemicals used exclusively as cosmetic ingredients, which was part of the Australian Government’s 2016 election commitment.
