AWWA announces NPDES pesticide application regulatory webcast

DENVER, CO -- The American Water Works Association (AWWA) announced today that it will host a webcast on anticipated National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit program requirements that directly affect drinking water suppliers and other water resource managers.  The webcast will be held on Wednesday, August 10, 2011, at 1:00 p.m. EDT.

The “NPDES General Permit for Pesticide Application to Water – Implications for Water Supply Management” webcast will address the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) general permit requirements for pesticide applications that introduce pesticides into “waters of the United States.”  This EPA permit and similar individual state actions are being undertaken under the Clean Water Act (CWA) to meet an Oct. 31, 2011 court-imposed deadline.

Webcast presenters will clarify for attendees which applications will require the new permits, and potential permit requirements including algaecides and other pesticides that are used in drinking water reservoirs, canals, and other water bodies.

Speakers will include Allison Wiedeman, Chief of the Rural Branch for EPA’s Office of Water, and John Thorne, PhD, Senior Policy Advisor at Crowell & Moring LLP.
