Axion helps launch retail giant`s beach toy
'We've managed to take waste off beaches where it threatens marine life and transform it into a brand new product that is fun for our customers and raises money to protect our seas,' comments Mike Barry, director of M&S' environment and ethical programme PlanA. The frisbees are sold for the equivalent of US$ 4.20 each, with 84 cents from each sale going to the Marine Conservation Society.
Two UK firms supported the project: recycler Axion Polymers of Salford in the north west of England transformed the beach litter into product-grade recycled plastic while the firm Make a Material Difference created and manufactured the frisbee.
According to M&S, 'at least 10%' of the recycled plastic has come from a volunteer effort by its employees and customers to clean 300 km of UK beaches last year.
