B&W MEGTEC Awarded Order for Environmental Equipment at new RoyOMartin Corrigan, Texas, OSB plant
De Pere, WI -- B&W MEGTEC, a subsidiary of Babcock & Wilcox (NYSE: BW), has been selected to design and manufacture environmental equipment for emissions abatement at RoyOMartin’s new oriented strand board (OSB) facility in Corrigan, Texas.
B&W MEGTEC will supply complete particulate control, volatile organic compound (VOC) and hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) abatement systems consisting of venturi scrubbers, separators and regenerative thermal oxidizer (RTO) systems for two complete dryer lines. The OSB plant manufactures structural wood paneling for the housing, construction and related industries. RoyOMartin operates two other manufacturing facilities, RoyOMartin OSB in Oakdale, Louisiana, and RoyOMartin Plywood in Chopin, Louisiana.
“B&W MEGTEC is proud we were chosen to supply the abatement systems for the Corrigan greenfield site,” said Rod Schwartz, B&W MEGTEC’s Vice President of Sales. “The use of the SonicKleen™ WESP and CLEANSWITCH® RTO will bring unique advantages related to energy consumption, maintenance and uptime.” Jonathan E. Martin, Chairman and CEO of Martin Companies, L.L.C., noted, “Based on Martco’s excellent operating results from using the B&W MEGTEC Turbosonic WESPS at our Oakdale facility, we are excited to add the B&W MEGTEC CLEANSWITCH® RTO to our newest OSB facility in Corrigan, Texas.”
When Martco LLC announced the selection of Corrigan, Texas, as the location for a new, state-of-the-art oriented strand board (OSB) facility, B&W MEGTEC was contacted for an opportunity to bid based, in part, on the successful B&W MEGTEC WESP installation at their Oakdale, Louisiana plant, operating since 2006. B&W MEGTEC was given the opportunity to quote both the WESPs and the RTOs for the new plant. In the equipment evaluation process for the RTO, the management team at RoyOMartin was impressed by the single switch valve technology of the CLEANSWITCH® RTO, the maintenance-friendly design, and the sizing approach/layout of the equipment, which allows them to take an RTO module off line for cleaning and still run the plant at 100% capacity. Overall, the design of the single rotary switch valve offered a strong maintenance reduction feature over the use of multiple dampers.
RoyOMartin analyzed the total solution offered by B&W MEGTEC, visiting an existing biofuels plant to inspect a unit that had been operating for some time, and visiting a plant site where a new unit was being installed. These visits were important considerations in their selection process.
Based on the past experience with the WESP and the benefits offered by B&W MEGTEC’s RTO technology, B&W MEGTEC was ultimately awarded the project. Schwartz explains, “Thermal oxidizers are designed to convert volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into carbon dioxide and water. In this case, the list of organic materials emitted in this process is long, and includes hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) such as formaldehyde, methanol, and specific pinenes. These compounds used in RoyOMartin’s manufacturing processes require regulatory compliance.” Facility site development began in early 2015, with installation of B&W MEGTEC equipment beginning in Spring of 2016 and plant startup anticipated for Fall of 2017.
