Baltic Sea environment visualized during EU Commission forum
What causes eutrophication in the Baltic Sea? What are the future scenarios for the ocean? Ocean environment issues will be illustrated in a visualization dome theatre during EU Commission forum in Gdansk, October 24-26th.
The eutrophication of the Baltic Sea could be affected by climate change. In any decision concerning the environment, it is therefore increasingly important to consider the effects of a warmer climate.
The new visualisation “Baltic Vision” focuses on facts relating to the ocean environment, as well as on various scenarios for the future. It indicates how the effects of a combination of change in climate and lower emissions might affect eutrophication.
The ocean environment presentation will be given during the European Commission’s 2nd Annual Forum on the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region, which is held together with the network Baltic Development Forum. The meeting is arranged in Gdańsk, Poland, 24-26 October. It will be attended by decision-makers from business, politics, international organisations and the academic world.
Baltic Vision will be shown in an inflatable dome theatre that accommodates 20 or so visitors at a time, where SMHI experts in climate, oceanography and hydrology are taking part.
The presentation is produced by SMHI and the Centre for Climate Science and Policy Research, CSPR, in cooperation with Visualiseringscenter C.
During the meeting SMHI is also presenting the visualization Urban Water Vision. Focus is on a changing climate with more rain and increasing intensity, and the challenges for city planning.
Furthermore, there will be presentations of the EU-project Baltadapt, where SMHI is taking part.
The content shown in Baltic Vision is a result from the research program BONUS/ECOSUPPORT, based on calculations over land and sea. Models being used are RCO SCOBI and Balt-HYPE (SMHI), BALTSEM (Baltic Nest Institute, Stockholm University) and ERGOM (The Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research, Warnemünde). An advanced multi-model system tool has been developed to create a Decision Support System. The Decision Support System consists of a large database displaying the scenarios for the Baltic Sea and will soon be available on the web.
