This will be recycled at the Tilbury docks recycling depot, in the Thurrock Thames Gateway estuary.
Property development company St Martins is working with demolition contractor Cantillon to clear the four acre brownfield site on the river Thames’ south bank for a new residential build
During the project about 60 per cent of all materials will be recycled via barge transport, with the remaining materials crushed onsite and reused. Developers estimate the barges have prevented an estimated 6,000 waste lorry movements.
St Martins assistant executive director Roger King said: “Removing the waste by river is an innovative solution cutting out the need for regular lorry movements, which will benefit local residents a great deal. I believe this project sets a benchmark to others of how to carry out a major demolition on a river frontage using a highly sustainable, neighbour-sympathetic approach.”
Cantillon has also pledged to recycle at least 93 per cent of all onsite material.
