BASF’s Catalysts division will introduce Mercury Sorbent ZX, an innovative mercury adsorbent solution for coal-fired power plants, at the Power Plant Air Pollutant Control “MEGA” Symposium, being held Aug. 30 – Sept. 2, 2010, in Baltimore, Maryland. The symposium is sponsored by The U.S. Department of Energy, the Electric Power Research Institute, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and the Air & Waste Management Association (A&WMA).
Mercury is a toxic, persistent pollutant that accumulates in the food chain. Mercury in the air is a global problem. Fossil fuel-fired power plants are one of the largest remaining sources of human-generated mercury emissions in the world. Currently in the United States, mercury regulations for coal-fired power plants have been enacted by many states, with federal regulations expected in the near future.
BASF Mercury Sorbent ZX has demonstrated excellent results in several full-scale demonstrations for both fabric filter and electrostatic precipitator particulate collection devices. It is a cost-effective product that is designed as a drop-in replacement for powdered activated carbon – no re-engineering of injection equipment is required.
“In third-party independent testing with sub-bituminous coal, BASF Mercury Sorbent ZX consistently delivered 90-percent-plus mercury removal from coal-fired power plant exhaust stacks to help meet state and federal regulations,” said Stan Mack, Business Manager, BASF Stationary Source Emissions. ”In addition, Mercury Sorbent ZX enables the utility to sell the fly ash generated during the combustion of coal for concrete applications, thereby increasing revenue opportunities for the customer while also avoiding fly ash disposal costs.”
