BEaR tender now underway

Source: Materials Recycling Week

The troubled Central Bedfordshire Energy and Recycling Project (BEaR) has advertised a contract notice meaning that the tender process is now underway.

As reported in MRW the BEaR project has faced some hurdles, losing its GBP£79million of Government PFI credits in January this year after both Luton Council and Bedford Borough Council pulled out of the project in October and December respectively.

Central Bedfordshire Council then decided to procure the contract alone and this has now gone out to tender, with a long-term waste treatment solution being sought. The contract notice has now been advertised through the Official Journal of the European Union.

BEaR Project assistant portfolio holder Councillor Budge Wells said: “We must find alternative ways to dispose of the waste that is not recycled.”

The BEaR project will consider all proposals made by the waste industry and expect to make further announcements on the progress of the tender later this year.

The contract selection process will take approximately two years and no final decisions are expected to be made on the type of technology or its location until 2012.
