Company Continues Tradition of Supporting Engineers Week(R) and Adds Sponsorship of Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day

SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 02/17/12 -- Bechtel Corporation and its employees will celebrate Engineers Week® 2012 by showing young people the significant and fascinating role engineering plays in the world. The company is also a sponsor of this year's Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day®, the day when thousands of women engineers directly mentor more than one million girls and young women in grades K through 12. Engineers Week, also known as EWeek, is coordinated by the National Engineers Week Foundation and runs February 19-25.

'A significant challenge in our industry is how to attract more young people, especially women, into the engineering profession,' said Bill Dudley, Bechtel president and chief operating officer. 'We believe our support of EWeek events and employee volunteer programs will give young people the opportunity to see the potential a career in engineering offers and encourage them to be part of the next generation of engineers.'

During EWeek, Bechtel employees across the United States will host interactive workshops and visit classrooms to raise awareness about engineering. One of the signature events will take place in Houston, where 300 Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Webelos will experience the different types of engineering during the 'Engineer for a Day' program. Employees will also take part in Discover E, an EWeek program in which professional engineers hold 'teach-ins' at K-through-12 schools around the country. Former CEO Steve Bechtel, Jr., helped create Discover E more than 20 years ago.

As a global leader in the engineering industry for more than 114 years, Bechtel is committed to helping grow the pipeline of engineering talent. In addition to supporting employee volunteer activities, the company provides scholarships and financial contributions to organizations that foster STEM-related (science, technology, engineering and math) learning.
