RESTON, VA -- (Marketwire) -- 11/29/12 -- Bechtel announced today that Savannah River Remediation (SRR) has received the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) Star of Excellence award. The honor recognizes SRR for its programs to ensure the health and safety of workers at DOE's Savannah River Site (SRS) in South Carolina. Bechtel is part of SRR, the liquid waste contractor responsible for the remediation of radioactive waste at the former nuclear weapons production facility.
This is the eleventh such award presented to the SRS liquid waste operations group and the third for SRR, which became the SRS liquid waste contractor in 2009.
Recognizing SRR's accomplishment and its effect on other SRS organizations, Dave Moody, DOE-SR operations manager, explained the award confirms the 'exemplary dedication' SRR commits to performing work safely at SRS. 'This award embodies the efforts SRR is fostering at SRS, especially with employees,' Moody said. 'They are performing work safely and instilling that mindset throughout the organization.'
'This recognition is a testament to the safety culture that has been and continues to be embraced by our employees,' said Dave Olson, SRR president and project manager. 'SRR employees continue to adhere to the VPP principles in the areas of management leadership, employee involvement, worksite analysis, hazard prevention and control, and safety and health training.'
SRR is a team of companies led by URS Corp. and also includes CH2M Hill and Babcock & Wilcox. Critical subcontractors for the contract are AREVA, Energy Solutions, and URS Professional Solutions.
