Plans to change the way residual waste will be dealt with in central Bedfordshire have been endorsed by the council’s executive.

Members of the executive committee approved the Bedfordshire Energy and Recycling Project business case meaning that a competitive selection process can now begin.

This follows the news in January this year that Central Bedfordshire Council’s application for £79million of Government PFI credits was turned down after both Luton Council and Bedford Borough Council pulled out of the project in October and December respectively.

Central Bedfordshire will now procure the contract alone , but as yet, has no idea which site or technology will be used saying this will be determined during the bidding process.

BEaR Project assistant portfolio holder Councillor Budge Wells said: “The decision made by Central Bedfordshire Council will have a massive impact the future of waste management in the area for years to come.”

It is expected that the council will begin a two-year selection process in late spring 2010 with no final decisions expected to be made until 2012.
