BERKELEY, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 03/20/12 -- Bio Architecture Lab (Bal) announced today it has received the 2012 Sustainable Biofuels Award (www.sustainablebiofuelsawards.com) presented at the World Biofuels Markets Congress & Exhibition 2012, Europe's largest congress and exhibition focused on biofuels. Bio Architecture Lab was honored with the 'Green Shoots' award, presented to the company with the most innovative breakthrough for sustainable biofuels production. The award comes soon after Bal was featured on the cover of Science magazine for its technology that converts seaweed (macroalgae) into renewable fuels and chemicals.
'It is an honor to receive the 2012 Sustainable Biofuels Award,' said Daniel Trunfio, CEO of Bio Architecture Lab. 'To have been named a finalist by expert judges but then selected by industry makes this award that much more meaningful. It is a reflection of the great promise that our technology holds as a global source of sustainable fuels and chemicals from seaweed.'
Bal has developed breakthrough technology that converts seaweed into advanced renewable fuels and chemicals. Its scientists have developed a pathway to metabolize the alginate in seaweed allowing the company to unlock all the sugars in seaweed, making it an economically viable feedstock for the production of renewable fuels and chemicals.
Seaweed is the ideal global feedstock for the commercial production of fuels and chemicals because in addition to its high sugar content it has no lignin. It also has a strong environmental footprint because it does not require arable land or freshwater to grow and can also help clean the oceans. Globally, about three percent of the coastal waters could produce more than 60 billion gallons of renewable fuels each year.
The 2012 Sustainable Biofuels Awards were judged by an elite panel of independent industry experts including Suzanne Hunt, Senior Advisor, Carbon War Room; Rob Vierhout, Secretary General, ePURE; Plinio Nastari, President, Datagro; Jim Lane, Editor, Biofuels Digest; Dr. Geng Anli, President, BioEnergy Society of Singapore; and Lola Uña Cárdenas, Chief Representative in the EU, Brazilian Sugarcane Industry Association. This group named the three finalists for the Green Shoots award, whose winner was then determined by the votes of individuals from across the biofuels value chain. More information on the Sustainable Biofuels Awards can be found at www.sustainablebiofuelsawards.com.
'We had thousands of nominations from around the world and across the entire biofuels value chain,' said Claire Poole, Event Director, Green Power Conferences, organizer of the awards and conference. 'The winning companies demonstrated a layer of achievement and promise above their peers that bodes well for themselves as well as the industry.'
