Bishop tails waste paper trail

Source: Materials Recycling Week

A bishop has followed his household waste paper collection to a paper mill to determine its fate.

The Bishop of Birmingham, the Right Rev David Urquhart, hitched a ride with the Birmingham City Council crew that collects his recycled paper.

He followed the load to the Smurfit Kappa mill in Nechells, Birmingham where the material is recycled into packaging.

Urquhart said: 'It is great to know that rubbish is recycled so locally - that is good news for both the environment and the economy.'

Smurfit Kappa Recycling commercial manager in Birmingham David Cowing said: 'There has been a lot of negative media coverage about the recycling that people have diligently sorted being stockpiled all over the UK because the downturn in markets has made it difficult to sell materials on.

“But at Smurfit Kappa Recycling this is not the case because we can reprocess the material in our UK paper mills. It is very important that we maintain public confidence in recycling so that the residents of Birmingham continue with the great job they are already doing, supporting a local industry and protecting the environment at the same time.'
