Black & Veatch, a leading global engineering, consulting and construction company, is undertaking a £4.3 million upgrade at the award-winning Glenfarg water treatment works (WTW) for Scottish Water. The project comprises improvements to wash water, sludge recovery and disinfection and capital maintenance works, and when complete the Glenfarg WTW will serve a population of 180,000.
The project team was awarded the title by the Considerate Constructors Scheme, a national initiative set up by the construction industry to encourage best practices that exceed UK statutory requirements.
Tony Collins, Managing Director of UK Water Utilities for Black & Veatch, commented, “This is a tremendous achievement for everyone involved on the project. Major awards like this can only be won when people work together to produce innovative results. The award is evidence of the high degree of cooperation between Black & Veatch and Scottish Water.”
Geoff Aitkenhead, Scottish Water Asset Management Director, said: “Congratulations to everyone involved. The degree of engagement with neighbors, landowners and the local community was clearly exemplary.”
The award citation declared the work at Glenfarg WTW “established a benchmark far exceeding the requirements of the scheme's Code of Considerate Practice. With excellent energy-saving measures and occupational health and safety practices in place, this site team dedicated itself to the detail of considerate site practices and was a major credit to the contractor and the industry.”
Sites were assessed for compliance with the eight sections of the Considerate Constructors’ code of practice that address the effects sites may have on the environment, workforce and general public. Each section is scored from one to five, with five rewarding exceptional, possibly unique, measures. Glenfarg WTW scored 40 out of 40. The top-scoring 10 percent of sites were reviewed by an independent panel; from these around 7.5 percent were selected for a National Award.
The recognition of Glenfarg as the “Most Considerate Site” and Gold Award winner crowns a strong performance from Black & Veatch at the Considerate Constructors Awards. A further seven Black & Veatch projects have been declared winners of Silver and Bronze Considerate Constructors Scheme 2009 National Awards.
