Bournemouth's Blue Flag Award winning seafront, one of the most popular resort beaches in the UK, has just won a Sustainable Tourism Award for its on-going commitment to recycling and energy reduction measures. Operated by Bournemouth Borough Council, the Seafront Team have recently written a 5 year Seafront Strategy aimed at developing the business in an environmentally sustainable way.

The award, presented by the Bournemouth Tourism industry recongnised efforts this year which saw 20% of beach litter recycled (over 168 tonnes) and 20% reductions in fresh water consumption from public taps, showers and toilet wash basins. With over 5 million visitors per year, the Seafront Team aim to turn the beach into a shop window for sustainable development. Through practical application of a range of sustainable initiatives we hope to inform and enthuse our visitors with ideas they can take home and apply, whilst preserving our fragile environment for future generations to enjoy.

Initiatives planned for the future include management of SSSI cliff faces with goat grazing, installation of micro wind generators, increased recycling facilities and ground source heat pumps to provide warm changing-room showers for Euripe's first artificial surf reef being constucted in May 2007.
