BPA Labeled Toxic by Canadian Government
EMSL Analytical provides bisphenol A (BPA) testing services to determine if the chemical is present in plastics or environmental samples to protect the public from exposure and health risks.

Last week the Canadian government classified bisphenol A as a toxic substance. The material is used to make plastics and can be found in some children’s toys as well as food and drink containers. Concerns over the potential for BPA to leach into food products made national headlines over the last few years.
According to a past article in the American Scientist more than 45 billion kilograms of plastics are produced annually in the United States and bispenol A, a commonly used plastic additive, ranks in the top 2 percent of high-production-volume chemicals.
The U.S. National Toxicology Program (NTP) has expressed concern regarding BPA’s adverse effects to the “brain, behavior and prostate gland in fetuses, infants, and children.” To date there has been little consensus amongst health agencies in the United States regarding the safety of BPA.
BPA is used in plastics, including drinking containers, as well as in liners in canned food products. The chemical is a known endocrine disruptor and low amounts may mimic a person’s own hormones. In response to media reports some major retailers in the U.S. pulled products with BPA over the last several years from their shelves after potential health problems came to light.
A number of manufacturers of reusable water bottles, and other plastic containers, now market products that are labeled as free of BPAs. “As the public has grown more aware of the potential for chemicals such as BPA to leach into their foods from containers we have seen an increase in calls to EMSL from consumers, retailers and manufacturers to test for the chemical,” reported Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President at EMSL Analytical. “EMSL’s Consumer Products Division provides state-of-the-art analysis to quickly and effectively answer people’s questions over BPA’s presence in various products.”
