Briquetting of aluminium chips - more profitable than ever
Companies which manufacture aluminium are under a rising cost pressure. In the recent past this industry has had to face the higher costs for coolants and also the increasing prices for the metal, while the sales prices are still under the same pressure as before. Briquetting is an economical and ecological addition to the recycling process.
The value enhancement with aluminium briquettes compared to loose chips is a result of different points, which are explained and evaluated below.
o Logistics. The delivery of chips to foundries often happens in big boxes by small workload of the truck. Briquetting saves deliveries and reduces the necessary size of the sumps, which economizes costs and saves storage space. In many cases it is possible to transport the briquettes directly to the foundry, which makes costly transports through collection points with their storage- and cargo handling costs superfluous, costs saving is 50 EUR/to on average.
o Coolant/Lubricant. Along with the metal chips, a significant volume of high quality cutting fluid is discharged from machine tools. The Briquetting of chips makes it possible to retrieve 20% of this coolant/lubricant. 15% of the pressed out emulsion makes a cost saving of 20% in the purchase of emulsion, provided the emulsion is returned to the production process. With oil as coolant, the savings are 7 to 20 times higher. The average savings are 20 EUR/to with emulsion and 150 EUR/to with oil.
o Conditioning costs. Wet chips have to be dried in an expensive way, which is calculated as a deduction in the refund. This deduction becomes superfluous after Briquetting. The average advantage is 50 EUR/to.
o Payment. The calculation is based on the weight of the metal. With wet chips there is a blanket subtraction because of the fluid, e.g. 20%. If the real amount of fluid in the box is just 15%, 5% of the metal are not paid. It is almost impossible to recheck this. The low rest humidity of briquettes avoids such losses. The rest humidity in the briquettes depends on the alloy, the chips form and the pressure during Briquetting. In general it is between 2 to 4%, but in any case defined and constant, just with minor fluctuations. The average advantage her is 50EUR/to.
o Optimized Sale. In many cases briquettes can be sold under better conditions then loose chips. Depending on the sales situation, a triple-digit additional revenue is possible.
The amounts listed above are average values and subject to the individual conditions of costumers from Germany. Especially the optimization of the marketing channel by Briquetting can lead to an even higher increase of profit. Companies with machining and an own melting shop can extremely profit by the Briquetting of their chips. The purchase can be partly replaced by the remelting of briquettes. The possibility for the use of briquettes depends on the oven, the metallurgy and the parts to produce.
Since 25 years Ruf GmbH & co. KG is developing, manufacturing and selling Briquetting presses for a wide range of materials and applications. More than 1700 sold machines are working in more than 90 countries in the world. For aluminium chips, - foils and other small cuttings we sold more than 350 machines, with 20 to 1000 kg throughput per hour.
