Scaling caused by hard water is a significant problem around the world. Breweries particularly wish to avoid the use of chemicals and water softeners if at all possible for their water treatment.

Scaling in steam producing boilers can be a particular problem. The only treatment Freeminer Brewery in England uses to prevent scaling in their boilers are catalytic scale preventers called Colloid-A-Tron. This unit has been the only water treatment that has been used on the boiler for 10 years and despite being in a hard water area no scale forms in the boiler and the boiler always passes its annual inspection.

Elgood & Sons is a brewery established in 1795 in the East of England it uses Colloid-A-Tron technology to prevent scaling in the angelleary heaters and in the cask washing machines. Prior to installation of the treatment unit, hammers and chisels had to be used to remove scale caused by the very hard local water every six months but now less than a cupful of scale is taken out of the bottom of the heater each year
