Bullfrog Power, Canada's 100 per cent green energy provider, will celebrate the Alberta launch of its new green natural gas product-the first and only 100 per cent green natural gas product to be widely available to homes and businesses across Canada-at the River Cafe in Calgary. The restaurant, an existing green electricity customer and one of the first businesses to sign on for 100 per cent green natural gas, is part of a growing community of Canadian businesses that are reducing their energy-related GHG emissions through Bullfrog Power.
'Sustainability is very important to us at the River Cafe,' said Sal Howell, Proprietor, River Cafe. 'We support organic growing practices and endorse suppliers whose methods of farming honour the land as a sustainable resource. Supporting green natural gas through Bullfrog Power was a natural next step for us in further reducing our environmental impact.'
Through the agreement, Bullfrog's producers inject 100 per cent green natural gas into the pipeline to match the amount of gas the River Cafe uses. Bullfrog Power's green natural gas is produced by capturing and cleaning the energy-rich gas produced through the decay of organic matter in our everyday waste stream. The gas is then injected onto the national gas pipeline, displacing fossil fuel-based gas sources. Unlike conventional natural gas, green natural gas does not increase the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
'The main cause of increasing carbon dioxide levels in our atmosphere is the burning of fossil fuels, including natural gas,' said Ed Whittingham, Executive Director, the Pembina Institute. 'We are excited that Bullfrog Power is capturing wasted gas from landfills and putting this to good use in our homes and businesses.'
In addition to choosing 100 per cent green natural gas, the River Cafe supports small local farms that practice sustainable farming and are dedicated to responsible stewardship of the land. The restaurant also sources local ingredients that come primarily from producers in Alberta and British Columbia and even has a container garden on-site to grow specialty herbs and fresh, edible flowers to use in its kitchen.
'We're pleased to have the River Cafe as one of our founding green gas customers,' said Tom Heintzman, President, Bullfrog Power. 'The restaurant is sending a strong message to other Alberta businesses that there is now an easy way to reduce their natural gas-related GHG emissions.'
Signing up for Bullfrog Power's green electricity and green natural gas requires no retrofits or special equipment and can be done online in minutes at www.bullfrogpower.com. Many homes and businesses in Alberta are already reducing their natural gas-related emissions by supporting 100 per cent green natural gas through Bullfrog Power.
'I am committed to reducing my GHG emissions and it's important to me that I help create a cleaner world for future generations. Cumulatively, even small steps can make a significant difference,' said Farhan Farshori, a bullfrogpowered® Calgary homeowner. 'Choosing renewable energy through Bullfrog Power is an easy way for me to make a positive impact on the environment.'
Some of the Bullfrog Power green gas customers at launch in Alberta include the Park Place Shopping Centre, Rocky Mountain Flatbread Company, Rocky Mountain Soap Company, Swizzlesticks Salon Spa and Organic Box.
