Businesses urged to make WEEE effort

Source: Materials Recycling Week

The Environment Agency (EA) has contacted more than 1,500 businesses across the north-east to remind them of their recycling responsibilities for electrical items.

Anyone importing, rebranding or manufacturing electrical or electronic equipment must register with the EA under the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Regulations. Breaching the regulations could lead to prosecution.

An EA spokeswoman said: “Work to raise awareness and remind businesses of their responsibilities across the country is ongoing. Each month will focus [on a different] area.”

EA north-east environment manager Julian Carrington said he would urge anyone needing guidance to phone for advice.

“We’re always looking to identify companies which potentially should be registered,” he said. “We will contact businesses to check and, if we discover they should have been registered, it is our policy to prosecute. We will bring charges for every year that the business was not registered.”
