Garden Grove, CA, February 7th, 2012 -- In 1986, California voters approved an initiative to address increasing concerns about exposure to toxic chemicals. That initiative, the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, is better known by its original name of Proposition 65.
Proposition 65 requires businesses to notify Californians about significant amounts of chemicals in the products they purchase, in their homes or workplaces, or that are released into the environment. This list now includes kresoxim-methyl, a systemic fungicide. It was added by the Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) to the Prop 65 list just this month.
Kresoxim-methyl is in the chemical family of Strobilurins. They are based on naturally occurring antifungal compounds found in some wood-decaying mushrooms. According to the British Columbia Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries, “Kresoxim-methyl is absorbed through the roots and translocated in the xylem to the stems and leaves, or through leaf surfaces to the leaf tips and growing edges. The mode of action is by inhibition of mitochondrial respiration in fungi. It inhibits spore germination, mycelial growth, and spore production.”
“Kresoxim-methyl was added by California to their Proposition 65 list because the State believes it can cause cancer,” reported Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President, Marketing at LA Testing and EMSL Analytical, Inc., a leading environmental and industrial hygiene testing laboratory. “Not only is exposure to humans a major concern, but kresoxim-methyl is also toxic to the environment. Although it has a relatively short half life, it is highly toxic to fish and other aquatic organisms. Testing to identify worker exposure, or the presence of kresoxim-methyl in the environment, can help prevent needless human exposures and damage to the environment,” he continued.
