Calls to increase producer responsibility to facilitate better waste management
A leading waste management body is calling for a revision of the current waste management strategy to focus on greater producer responsibility.
The Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management believes that this country needs to build on its existing recycling efforts by assigning more of the costs of managing downstream waste to the producer.
CIWEM director of policy Justin Taberham said: “Despite its efforts, the UK is currently lagging behind many other European states in this area. Improvements must be made to the system to further promote minimisation if the production of waste, supported by a circular flow of resources and materials designed to facilitate reuse and recycling wherever possible.”
This is a sentiment echoed by the Industry Council for Packaging and the Environment. Director Jane Bickerstaffe said: “We’re 100% in favour of waste minimisation. The main reason for using packaging is to minimise the waste of products and all the energy and resources that are invested in making them (typically 10 times more resources go into products than their packaging).
“We also support minimising the amount of packaging used because packaging costs money and a company is more competitive if it keeps its costs down – it’s a win/win environmentally and economically.”
