TORONTO -- Toronto's pioneering AutoShare company is experiencing its most significant growth in its 13-year history. To meet the demand, it is expanding its fleet by at least 35%.
'Rising gas prices, $30,000 condo parking spaces are deterring people from car ownership,' says AutoShare president and founder Kevin McLaughlin.
'All the chatter on social media platforms like Twitter, about how great life can be without a car, is encouraging people to bike when they can and use carsharing for when they need a trunk.'
The locally owned company is increasing its fleet to more than 300 vehicles and extending its reach to 180 locations across the GTA. With an ongoing commitment to innovation, fun and energy efficiency, AutoShare is adding 3 new hybrid models to its fleet:
- Toyota's Hybrid Prius V,
- Prius C, and
- Hybrid Camry
It will also be adding the Fiat 500 Cabriolet Convertible and member-favourite Mazda 3 hatchback (with the very efficient SkyActiv technology).
'While gas prices may attract people to carsharing, AutoShare also gives people the chance to sell their parking spaces and avoid repair and maintenance costs,' says McLaughlin.
'These things give people a real reason to smile.' It is estimated that more than 25,000 people now rely on carsharing. As a result a result, as many as 7,500 fewer cars are on the road today.
Car sharing programs are springing up around the world and are offering beleagured urban dwellers a viable alternative to car ownership. Universities across North America are experimenting with vehicle sharing programs as well.
Over the last year, AutoShare has also made the service more accessible to a younger demographic who don't want to be burdened by the costs attached to personal car ownership. Eligibility requirements now allow 21 year olds to apply for a membership.
And, by building an insurance record, young people can save even more money in case they do ever need to own a car in the future.
Founded in 1998 and 100% locally owned, AutoShare is Toronto's independent car company, designed for life in the city. The company pioneered carsharing in the GTA, starting in 1998 with a real commitment to being part of the transit-system.
With vehicles at over 150 locations across the city, AutoShare's 12,000 members can choose from a variety of vehicles starting at $8/hr including gas and insurance.
